Our Story

Mum’s Love Children’s Home was established in November 2013 by Alice M. Kanini, a woman of remarkable compassion and unwavering dedication, affectionately known in her community as “Mama Alice.” Prior to founding the organization, she earned a modest living selling secondhand clothes, locally called mtumba, in the streets of Nairobi, within her Soweto neighborhood. What began as a simple business soon transformed into a heartfelt mission.

Moved deeply by the hardships faced by abandoned children, orphans, vulnerable youth, street children, and the elderly around her, Mama Alice began quietly sharing what little she had. Using the modest profits from her business, she purchased food, educational materials, and clothing to support those in need.

Later that same year, with the formal approval of the Kenyan government through a Community Based Organization certificate and the support of the Children’s Department, Mama Alice took the courageous step of welcoming two abandoned children into her small iron-sheet home. This humble beginning marked the foundation of what would grow into a beacon of hope and sanctuary.

By early 2014, the number of children in her care had increased to 20, ranging from one month to six years old. With steadfast support from the community and the organization’s leadership, Mama Alice expanded her home on land inherited from her mother, providing shelter and care for more children in desperate need.

Through her unwavering passion and dedication, Mum’s Love Children’s Home has, over the years, positively impacted the lives of over 635 children, many of whom have been successfully reintegrated with their extended families or placed in kinship care. Today, the home provides full-time care for 44 abandoned, orphaned, and vulnerable children, offering them not only shelter, education, food, healthcare, and clothing but also a second chance at love and the opportunity to build a brighter future.

The success and sustainability of this vital work depend entirely on generous donations, both financial and in-kind, from individuals, churches, youth and women’s groups, universities, agencies, and the surrounding community. Together, under Mama Alice’s compassionate leadership, we continue to nurture tomorrow’s leaders and restore hope where it is needed most.  As of 2024 Mum’s Love Children’s Home officially became a registered NGO in the Republic of Kenya.
